The Purple French Marble paper is machine-marbled on an Ingres or bond paper base stock. The pattern originates from 15th and 16th century marbling, first invented in Persia. The French perfected the marbling process and used it extensively in the 18th and 19th centuries for the endsheet and outer bindings of books.  Its many decorative uses include bookbinding, book arts, collage, card making, rubber stamping, framing, and much more.
